Wall Murals
Size & ratio to the sofa?
Start with 60–75% of the sofa's width. The safe sweet spot is often around 70%.
- Sofa 240 cm → harmonious picture width approx. 145–180 cm
- Better a bit too large than too small: too small looks "lost", too large usually looks like a "statement".
- For 2 pictures, the total width including spacing counts.
Hanging height, so it doesn't look like a "waiting room"?
Guideline: Center of the picture approx. 145 cm above the floor.
Above a sofa: Bottom edge often approx. 15–20 cm above the backrest, depending on the sofa's height.
Tip: First mark with painter's tape, take a photo, let it sink in for a moment.
Tape Trick in 3 Minutes
- Measure sofa width
- Calculate 70%
- Mark the width on the wall with painter's tape
- Take a photo from a distance of 2–3 m
- View in the morning and evening, as light changes the effect
Colors & Styling, to make it look curated
- Repeat 1-2 colors from the picture in the room, e.g. cushions, vase, candle.
- If the picture is dominant: keep the rest calmer, matte surfaces, fewer small objects.
- If the room is calm: 1 dark tone in the picture adds contour.
Set or individual image
- A large picture has a calmer and more "boutique" effect.
- A set of 2 looks curated and helps to build width above the sofa.
- Rule of thumb: For a wide sofa and the desire for "more wall", a set is often the easiest solution.
Vases
Which vase size fits where?
- Sideboard: One large object usually looks more upscale than many small ones.
- Dining table: preferably medium height, so you can still see each other.
- Coffee table: rather low, but exciting in form or material.
- Premium rule: Give the vase space, don't squeeze it between small items.
Flowers and branches to make it look elegant?
It often looks harmonious if the arrangement is approximately 1.5 times as high as the vessel.
- Fewer stems plus air look more expensive than a full bush.
- One variety is almost always calmer than a mix.
- Dried flowers: fewer, but more beautiful. Fresh branches: super "boutique".
Styling Recipe, 1-3 Rule
- 1 hero vase
- plus 2 quiet companions: a book and a candle or a bowl and matches
Odd-numbered groupings often look more natural and less "staged."
Colors & Styling, for a curated look
- Repeat 1–2 colors from the picture in the room, e.g. cushions, vase, candle.
- If the picture is strong: keep the rest calmer, matte surfaces, fewer small items.
- If the room is calm: 1 dark tone in the picture adds contour.
Care
- Wipe with a dry cloth, do not use harsh cleaning agents
- Coasters or felt protect furniture
- If using water: check if glazed inside, otherwise decorate dry
Statement Decor
Non-tacky check
It looks premium if the piece is given space and doesn't compete with 10 other items.
- 1 hero piece plus 2 subtle companions
- If the piece shines, keep the rest matte
- Repeat a color a maximum of twice in the room
Where does it work best?
- Sideboard: left or right as anchor, next to it a book and a candle
- Shelf: at eye level, with space around it
- Entrance: strong, because it immediately shows character, but please tidy around it
- Coffee table: only if suitable for everyday use, otherwise it quickly becomes a nuisance
30-second styling recipe
- Tray or stack of books as a base
- Sculpture on top
- 1 small companion, candle or bowl
Three elements often look curated without being cluttered.
